Time For A Dental Checkup

Is it Time for a Checkup?

Many people make the mistake of waiting until their oral health takes a nasty turn before turning to a dentist for help. This is unfortunate considering that dentists offer regular check-ups that are intended to prevent issues before they arise. One should book in one of these dental checkup appointments every 6 months. However, if you’ve already waited too long and/or certain signs crop up, get yourself in that dentist’s chair for a checkup immediately regardless. Here are the signs:

Pain in Teeth or Gums

Pain is the body’s natural response to some kind of disturbance to its health. It’s an alert that something is wrong and a call to your attention. In the case of your mouth, it should also be a call to your dentist’s attention! There are a whole host of issues that may be indicated by a toothache that your dentist will be able to figure out, such as a decayed tooth, a cavity, an impaired filling, or an infection in your gums. So, in addition to easing your pain, you’ll want to fix the underlying cause of it.

Sensitivity in Teeth or Gums

Your teeth may become suddenly super sensitive to hot and cold. Smoothies, ice cream, hot coffee, or soup may all give you an eerie tingling sensation and make it difficult to consume them. Aside from being terribly annoying that you can’t have your favorite foods and beverages, it may imply something’s wrong, like your gums have receded, tooth enamel or filling has been worn, or you may have gum disease.

Bleeding Gums

When gums bleed regularly, it’s an immediate warning to seek out your dentist immediately. If it’s a one-off occurrence, like once or twice after brushing or flossing, that’s okay. But any more than that is not. Very often, it occurs due to gingivitis which leads to periodontal disease; a quite common oral health issue for adults. If not treated appropriately by a dentist, it will very likely cause future health problems.

Bad Breath

Besides being a point of embarrassment, an unpleasant odor coming from your mouth all the time might be more than a symptom of eating lots of garlic and onions. Rather, chronic bad breath, otherwise known as halitosis, might just be another sign that something is up with your oral hygiene. Often there may be a noteworthy buildup of bacteria and plaque that should be of concern to you and your dentist.

Loose Teeth

When you’re young and still have your baby teeth, a loose tooth can be cause for excitement, knowing that your teeth are in transition as you become older. But when you’re an adult, you shouldn’t expect to have a loose tooth unless something’s wrong. You may have had an injury that caused it, or perhaps osteoporosis has taken its toll on your teeth.

Don’t Wait

If any of these danger signs crop up, don’t hesitate to call your dentist’s office as soon as possible. Teeth are strong and resilient and only cause issues when something’s really wrong. Often such complications only become more complicated, the longer you wait to address them properly.
