Preventive Dentistry: What You Need to Know

The best way to keep those pearly whites sparkling, full of life, and cavity free is to ensure you’re up to date with your preventive dentistry. “What’s that?”, you say? It’s the practice of keeping your teeth and gums in good nick so that they will last you for many years to come – your whole life in fact!

Beyond daily brushing with a fluoride filled toothpaste and daily flossing to remove plaque and other build up, there are some other bits and pieces that you can do to make sure your mouth remains in tip top shape. Read on to find out more.

Preventive care

While many people actively avoid the dentist, there is no reason to be scared! Coming in for regular 6 month check ups and cleanings will help you to keep your teeth in good shape. We remove all the plaque that regular brushing can’t quite clean and check your teeth and gums for any signs of cavity, fractures, crumbling, or disease.

Gum disease

Gum disease, or Periodontitis can occur in any individual. If you don’t clean properly, or have regular check ups, then you might find yourself walking down this path – if you aren’t there already! Plaque build up can lead to inflamed, and bleeding gums that is a sure sign of Gingivitis – the precursor to Periodontitis. While Gingivitis is very common amongst adults, you need to know when it is happening and how to treat it properly so that damage does not occur.

Having regular check ups can inform you whether you might be at risk of this disease. If you think you might have it already – well then it is definitely time to come in and have a look.

Custom fitted mouth guards

Do you play sports? If so, then it’s time to come in and get yourself fitted for a custom mouthguard. Mouthguards are required in kids and in adults too when they’re out on the field, court, or rink, to reduce the risk of injury occurring to the teeth. Without a proper mouthguard you leave yourself at risk of getting your teeth knocked out!

While you may already have a generic mouthguard that you picked up from the pharmacy, a custom fitted mouthguard is more effective in preventing injury to your mouth and more comfortable to wear too.

Come visit us at Dental Avenue in our brand new dental clinic in Parramatta. With excellent facilities, and friendly, knowledgeable staff, you’ll be happy that you did. Book in today for your next appointment!
